If someone's interested...
I was inspired by a photo of Alexander McQueen, Anton Corbijn was the photografer.
Alexander has for a long time been one of my idols. He was a great artist and one of the most interesting and refreshing fashion designers I've ever seen. In the year of 2010 he decided to leave this life to continue somewhere else. Ever since I've wondered - Why?
He left me with a enigma that I now started to analyse, twist and turn to see all the different sides of it, divide it into into small, separate parts to put together again...
And after some research, I've had found enough information to make a statement of why I think he commited suicide.
I've decided to name my painting "Jag vägrar knarka kläder" ("I refuse to treat clothes as a drug") because I think that was exactly what he was doing in the bitter end.
You see, Alexander had had some drug problems before he died, something that might have caused some of his friends leaving. He had also been in a one-year-lasting marriage that unfortunatelly didn't work out. He had been openly gay sience he was 18 and after a rocky period after his out-coming his parents accepted his sexual orientation, a period that might have created scars that he was going to wear for the rest of his life. He was incredible successfull in his business and he has gained a lot of prices.
It was about a week after his mother death that he decided to kill himself. I don't think this was just a coincidense. I think he felt like he had achieved all the goals he had put up for himself in his work and so he had nothing left to offer to the world. I think he felt lonely. I guess his mother stood him very close, and when she died it became the straw that broke the camel's back.
The reason why...
The background of the painting is dark is because it was a tragical story I wanted to tell with it.
The maincharacter of the painting is a girl instead of a boy is because Alexander worked with mostly female modells and because I think he may have wanted to be one himselve because of his sexual orientation.
The shirt is orange/red is because when Alexander wanted something to be extra dramatic he choosed these colors.
The reason why the girl has black, short hair and ear gauges is because I wanted her to remind a little of Lisbeth Salander (from "The Girl with a dragon tatoo") as a symbol of the exceptional skills a person can possess. In Alexanders case - within the tailoring and design work.
There are some lyrics in the background is because one of them comes from a song which musicvideo Alexander directed and the other was played on his funeral. The largest is a quote from Alexander himselves that I have adjusted to suit the painting a little bit better by removing the mentioned names:
"It's so
much bollocks. These people just don't know what they're talking about. They
don't know me... That part of the industry, they should stay away from my life.
What I had was completely dissociated from fashion, beyond fashion."
